WHY PTA?
EDUCATION
SUPPORT CRITICAL ACADEMIC NEEDS
PTA funds essential school resources and curriculum needs, including investments in technology, the arts, and science programming.
- Every year Lyndon PTA gives each of the 40+ teachers a grant that they can use to fund critical needs within their classroom.
- The PTA financially supports the Lyndon library to ensure students have access to quality books and a welcoming space, including securing a $50k grant to renovate in 2018.
- In 2019, in partnership with Friends of the Lyndon, the PTA purchased a new guided reading library at the request of Mrs. Tunney and the lower school teachers.
- In 2020 and 2021 the PTA purchased IXL Personalized Learning software to aid students within SAR classes in their remote learning experience.
- The PTA sponsors the Outdoor Classroom to enable study of and within nature.
- National PTA funds the nation's largest and longest running student arts program, Reflections®, which provides students access to arts, music, literature, dance, drama, and visual arts.
ADVOCACY
GIVE A VOICE TO IMPORTANT ISSUES
PTA has an active voice at the local, state and national levels, and impacts decisions affecting your child's health, safety and quality of education.
- PTA is the oldest and largest child advocacy association in America, comprised of over 22,000 local PTAs and nearly 5 million members.
- During the past 120 years, PTA's national advocacy has helped establish universal kindergarten, the National School Lunch Program, the juvenile justice system, and anti-child labor
- PTAs are an important advocate at the local and state levels - from the Florida PTA defeating for-profit school management companies to the Washington State PTA securing the passage of an education reform bill that redefined the state's "Program of Basic Education."
Massachusetts PTA has advocated for the students of the commonwealth at their annual PTA Legislative Day at the State House. Learn more about Massachusetts PTA Advocacy & Legislative Committee
Lyndon PTA has advocated for the students at the Lyndon and across Boston Public Schools during the 2019 school start times initiative, as well as for safety measures at the school and to demand safe drinking water for students in 2016.
COMMUNITY
BUILD A STRONGER, MORE INCLUSIVE SCHOOL
PTA strengthens connections between your family, your child's classmates and their families, and teachers to build a thriving and inclusive community for everyone.
- The PTA builds community through annual events like the Welcome Back Picnic, K1/K2 Welcome Coffee, Eco Friendly Fridays in the Outdoor Classroom, and our Room Parent event Coffee and Community.
- The Lyndon PTA hosts the Parkway Turkey Trot to build support for the school throughout the larger West Roxbury/Parkway community.
- Every year in May the PTA celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week, an event originated by National PTA over 30 years ago. This is an opportunity for the Lyndon community to say thank you to our teachers and staff, and recognize the great work they do all year long.
- The PTA offers social events for parents and caregivers after PTA meetings as well as our new 2023 PTA adult Mixer.
- In partnership with the Parkway YMCA, the PTA offers childcare during PTA meetings to make meetings more accessible to all.
- As a network of over 22,000 schools and nearly 3.5 million families, PTA connects parents and caregivers, students and teachers at the local, state, and national levels.
